The number of domestic violence incidents continues to rise, making it that much more important for us to talk about this issue in our churches. If we, at Catholic Charities, can be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact us. For additional information on services or to seek counsel, contact us directly at 856-342-4162.
While 85% of victims are women, it’s important for all victims to know how to find help when in an abusive relationship.
Together, we must “break the silence” and we wish to extend a healing hand to those who have been impacted. Just as the Conference of Catholic Bishops stated in their letter on this issue, “When I Call for Help” batterers need to be accountable for their harmful choices.
When I Call for Help: A Pastoral Response to Domestic Violence Against Women
A Prayer for Those Experiencing Abuse: Psalm 55
(excerpt from the Bishops’ document)
Listen, God, to my prayer;
do not hide from my pleading;
hear me and give answer.
If an enemy had reviled me,
that I could bear;
If my foe had viewed me with contempt,
from that I could hide.
But it was you, my other self,
my comrade and friend,
You, whose company I enjoyed,
at whose side I walked
in procession in the house of God.
But I will call upon God,
and the Lord will save me.
At dusk, dawn, and noon
I will grieve and complain,
and my prayer will be heard.
